Paithani Sarees: Woven Legacy of Maharashtra with Silkviz

Paithani sarees are not just garments—they are heirlooms, lovingly passed through generations, steeped in the royal traditions of Maharashtra. Crafted from pure silk and real zari (silver threads with gold plating), Paithanis were once adorned by queens and aristocrats. Their legacy began in Paithan, near Aurangabad, and flourished in Yeola, where weavers still breathe life into this ancient art.
At Silkviz, we honour this heritage through every thread. Our family has been part of Yeola’s weaving tradition for over 200 years, and today, we bring those timeless weaves to the world. Every Silkviz Paithani saree is crafted with authenticity, love, and the promise of lasting legacy.

How to Identify a Real Paithani Saree

  1. Zari Check: Authentic Paithanis use real silver zari. Rub the zari gently with a cloth—real zari will retain shine, while fakes may leave a coppery mark.
  2. Reversible Weave: Traditional Paithanis are handwoven with reversible borders and pallu (padar). Machine-made or powerloom sarees usually aren’t.
  3. Woven Motifs, Not Prints: Look closely—Paithani motifs are meticulously woven in, not printed or stitched. The reverse side will be just as clean.
  4. Feel of Pure Silk: A genuine Paithani feels luxuriously rich, with a firm yet soft drape—never too shiny or slippery.

Traditional Motifs and Their Meaning

  • Mor (मोर / Peacock): Grace and beauty, most famously woven on the pallu.
  • Bangdi Mor (बांगडी मोर): Peacock woven in a circular ‘bangle’ formation—a signature motif.
  • Kamal (कमळ / Lotus): Symbol of purity and spiritual awakening, often in the pallu or border.
  • Asawali (असावाली/ Floral Vines): Creeper and vine motifs symbolizing life, celebration, and abundance.
  • Narali Border (नारळी काठ): Diagonal coconut or mango-shaped motifs forming a slanted border.
  • Dalimbi (डाळिंबी / Pomegranate): Small repeating pomegranate seeds—symbol of fertility and prosperity, often used across the body of the saree.

At Silkviz, each saree is not just a product—it’s a portal to heritage. Whether you’re a first-time buyer or a connoisseur, our handpicked Paithani collection is crafted to be cherished for a lifetime.
